Tomas Owen studied and practiced architecture, theatrical design and art direction for film and television before he began to work with ceramics in Naolinco, Veracruz in the late 70’s. The strong heritage of pre-Columbian ceramics in Mexico cannot be ignored and has been a strong influence on his work. As of late he has been most attracted to figurative pieces and the decorative possibilities of bowls.  His studio is in Xalapa, Mexico. “My journey thru the world of ceramics has always been defined by the technical demands of materials and a need for balance between graceful form, texture, and colors. My most important tools are my hands, and most of my work is thrown on a wheel, altered, assembled, and fired to cone 6 (2,230 F).”
