ASK THE ARTIST: 12 QUESTIONS & A JOKE,
is an opportunity for our gallery supporters, friends and clients to get to know our artists a little better. It’s a fun way to get a glimpse into the personalities of the artists and at the same time connecting the artist with their art.

Q: If there was a favorite work of art you could hang or display in your home, which would it be?
MM: “The Dreamers” by Albert Moore
Q: If their were one dead artist that you could hang out with for a day, who would that be? Why?
MM: The actor and art aficionado, Vincent Price. I would love to talk to him about his own art collection and his B Horror Movies. I especially love his Edgar Allen Poe movies.

Q: If there were a magic power you could use in your art making, what would it be?
MM: To make my art faster but with the same results.
Q: If we were going to talk about your art, where would you want to start?
MM: My technique. It is time-consuming but well worth it. Patience and lots and lots and lots of layers…All of my control issues are in my artwork. LOL!
Q: What quality in others makes you want to slap them?
MM: So many, but it’s not worth hurting my hand. I just try to enjoy my happy.
Q: Art is so subjective, what kind of art is unappealing to you?
MM: Bad art. (Can I say that?)
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given as far as your art, inspiration or career?
MM: When I first started painting, I was getting bombarded from other artists, telling me to loosen up, that my work was too tight. I got a great critique from Steve Dougherty, the editor of American Artist Magazine, he said that I should follow my heart and not let others influence what I loved to do and could do.
Q: What is most important to you…the subject, the process or the final work? MM: Process
Q: If your work was edible, what would it taste like? MM: Fruity, sweet with a hint of spice…oh wait, that’s me!
Q: What is the one thing you need in your studio to work, other than your art supplies? MM: Artist food- cookies, candy, really anything sweet.
Q: What is your most favorite piece of your artwork on display in Galeria de Ida Victoria now, and why? MM: “Emerald Topaz and Garnet”, It’s a painting that I would keep for my own collection.
Q: In the era of the internet, why do you choose to continue to work with galleries?
MM: I’m a ludite, I truly dislike computers. The only thing about them that I do like is Spell Check. Q: Now the best part, tell us a joke.
MM: Why do you NOT want to play hide and seek with a mountain?……They peak! (All my jokes come from Hubba Bubba bubble gum wrappers.)
Why do I love Misty Martin’s work?
I am very proud to have Misty and her art in the gallery. Even if I do not talk about her credentials as Master Artist or the awards she has won for her work, or the fact that she has a painting in the permanent collection at the Tate Museum in London, I have a profound respect for her technique, her eye, her patience. Though I am a watercolor artist we are drawn to the same subjects, such as architecture, and the play of light on surfaces and the end goal being that translation of light through paint. Her work celebrates that light on man-made surfaces and with her ridiculous attention to detail, she manages to celebrate every nook and cranny on any surface she has chosen as her subject. Misty is self-taught which also impresses me; she learned her technique not only from artist friends, but through mostly trial and error and hours and hours of perfecting her craft, and now happily shares that knowledge and her love of painting with her students. Not only is she super talented and a beautiful addition to our roster of artists, she is also a kind hearted and fun person to be with. The glass is always half full with Misty, and we love that!
